Trust & Health, What’s The Connection?

Does trust affect your health?  In whom or what do you trust, or do you trust at all? The dictionary defines trust as having confidence in; to depend or rely upon; to believe; to expect confidently; to hope.  Synonymous with trust is certainty, belief, faith, assurance and security.

Trust affects our health in profound ways.  How you deal with stress, tragedy and life is directly affected by your trust, or lack thereof.  Do you trust that things will be ok; that you will be ok?  Or do you worry, have stress, frequently blow up in anger, have bitterness, resentment, become sad or irritable because circumstances or people in your life are unfair, wrong, infuriating or hateful?

What happens to a person when their mind does not trust?  The opposite of trust is defined as distrust, doubt, suspicion, unreliability and unpredictability. Suspicion is doubting the trustworthiness of appearances and therefore believing possibilities of something unreliable, unfavorable, menacing, or the like.  When a person finds themselves in constant or frequent states of stress, worry, fear, anger, resentment, bitterness, anxiety, etc., they will have physical manifestations that very literally can make them sick.  Insomnia, headaches and migraines, nausea, indigestion, back pain, chest pain and high blood pressure can all be symptoms of lack of trust, having no peace, and feeling out of control.  Lack of trust can also cause anxiety and/or depression, and can be responsible for throwing your bodies hormonal balances off, which in turn can affect the mind and body. Negative thoughts and feelings lower the body’s immune system, thereby making you susceptible to illness, infections and other health problems.

Another problem is that a majority of people seek relief from their thoughts and feelings by drinking alcohol, taking pills, seeking entertainment, using illegal drugs, overeating, or other things, to escape or alleviate discomfort.   And while many think that the only reason they do these things is for enjoyment, they are actually dependent and addicted, and would quickly become distressed and even sick without them.

There is excellent evidence on the health benefits of trust. When a person trusts, the negative effects of anger, fear, worry, resentment, etc. are majorly eliminated or drastically reduced.  With trust, the immune system is strengthened and you experience a significant increase in protection against heart disease and cancer.

You may be thinking.... trust?  What trust? People trust that they have a good job; that they will be ok; that their family, their spouse or their children will take care of them if trouble arises. People trust that their health insurance policy and their doctor will be able to fix and cure them should they become ill or injure themselves.  They trust that they have enough money to get by, or to retire with.

Here is the key question: if calamity strikes do you have trust that everything will be alright? In the face of great uncertainty; with the imminent threat of financial collapse; the fear of being diagnosed with cancer, or another deadly disease, receiving the news of a loved one dying suddenly in a disaster; these are times when the heart instinctively cries out and looks for: comfort, peace and trust, and core beliefs are challenged to the uttermost.

We are living in momentous times.  Almost instinctively people sense that great changes are taking place and that there is little if anything in this world that is trustworthy. I strongly commend to you that the Creator of all is truly trustworthy. Knowing and trusting a loving God saves us from anguish and despair, gives us hope--an anchor deep within our heart that enables us to hold on and have trust when bad things happen--when uncertainty surrounds us.

The prophecies of the Bible foretell a time coming when there will be great distress on earth.  There is a controversy between good and evil, between darkness and light; there is a real war going on here.  With all the news media these days we have seemingly easy access to an endless amount of information gives many people a false sense of security.  Our state of mind reflects whether or not we have trust.  Do you have love, joy and peace in all circumstances?  Do you know what happens after death?  Do you have assurance, contentment and hope for the future?
